RTF, PDF and DOC

The exporters for the PDF, the Rich Text and the Word Format make exporting of documents including the text styles possible (as opposed to the Plain Text Exporter). They have most of the formatting options in common and only differ in some details. The PDF format offers the most options, followed by the Rich Text format and the Word format.

Templates

Since the settings for these export format are quite extensive, they can be saved as a template. These templates can be used for these three export formats. Because the PDF format has the largest range of settings, it is advisable to create the templates with the PDF Exporter. The settings not used by the Rich Text Exporter and the Word Format Exporter are ignored upon export to those formats.
In order to create a new template, the settings need to be adjusted first. Afterwards, "Save as Template…" has to be selected. In the appearing popUp, a name for the new template can be entered.
If the settings of an existing template should be changed, the template has to be selected from the template menu first. After these settings are loaded, modifications can be made. Finally, the "Save as Template…" button can be clicked and the template name of the template just changed has to be entered. The button "Delete Template" does exactly the same as it says.
The drop-down menu always contains two standard templates and the item "Last Setup". If the latter is chosen, the settings from the previous Ulysses session will be loaded.

Page setup

In the section the page format, the orientation (those settings can be modified by clicking "Page Setup…") as well as the margins can be adjusted. If the settings do not fit to the selected printer, a warning will be displayed and the settings can be readjusted.

Paragraph styles

The formatting of an exported document is defined by the paragraph styles. In the column "Style", the used paragraph style can be assigned to the desired formatting. In addition to the paragraph styles given by the Ulysses preferences, there are four other elements a paragraph style can be assigned to: "Normal text", "First line", "Title of document" and "Subtitle".
In "Normal Text", the appearance of the body text can be modified. This style also is the base format for the other settings. It is used for every paragraph style with the setting "Like normal text".
Using "First line", a different style can be assigned for the first line of a document. Thus, the first line (without special markers) can be used as a heading.
Similarly, the title can be assigned its own style using "Title of document", which will then be inserted at the beginning of every document.
The last option, "Subtitle", can be used if the document does not start with a heading. Furthermore, if there is a heading at the beginning, a subtitle is inserted right after the heading in the assigned style. A subtitle can consist of the document title, the status, the label and the timestamp. These elements can be selected by ticking the checkboxes next to them.

Editing Paragraph styles

By clicking on "Edit…" in the context menu of a style, the available paragraphs styles can be edited, new paragraph styles can be added, or existing ones can be deleted.
The available styles are listed on the left-hand side of the Paragraph Style Editor. Styles printed in bold are currently in use and can consequently not be deleted. The order of this list is the same as the order of the styles in the context menu. This order can be changed by dragging the entries to the desired position. By clicking the "+" or the "-" button, a new style can be added or an existing one deleted, respectively. If the Duplicate button is clicked, a copy of the selected paragraph style will be created. By clicking the name of a paragraph style, the style will be selected and its properties will be displayed in the right-hand side of the editor. The following properties of the selected paragraph style can be modified: font, alignment (left, right, centered, natural or justified), line spacing, indention (at the start and the end), spacing between paragraphs, classification in the hierarchy (the numeration of the headings depends on the hierarchy), tabstops (position and its type).
After clicking "Save", the changes will be applied to the current export settings; however, they will not be applied to a (potentially) selected template. To apply the changed styles to the templates, they will have to be saved as template as well (see section "Templates"). "Cancel" will discard all changes.

Inline styles

In the column "Style", a text formatting or one of the actions "Delete tags", "Delete text" or "Don't touch" can be assigned to a text style. "Delete Tags" will remove the tags and will leave the formatting of the text as it is. "Delete Text" will delete every tagged text passage including the tags. The last option, "Don't touch", ignores the tags and the text in between the tags. The inline styles can be edited, added or delete just like the paragraph styles.

Editing Inline styles

To open the Inline Style Editor, "Edit…" has to be selected from the context menu of an inline style, which are shown in the column "Style". Most of the settings in this editor are very similar to the Paragraph Style Editor (see "Editing Paragraph styles" for details). The only difference between these two editors lies in the properties. Upon selecting an inline style from the list, the right-hand side of the editor will display the font traits, various underlining styles and the foreground (i.e., font) and background colors.
The "Save" and "Cancel" buttons work exactly the same as in the Paragraph Style Editor.

Marker styles

Markers can be assigned to the same text formattings or actions like the text styles, except the action "Delete Tags", since markers are not tagged. Instead, characters can be inserted at the start and the end of the marked passages using the action "Enclose in". The inserted characters are arbitrary, the start and the end characters can even differ. If one wants to do so, the desired characters have to be entered after each other (start first, end second) and separated by " - " (space, dash, space),. For instance, if "S" should be at the start of a marker and "E" at its end, "S - E" would have to be entered.

Extras

In the section "Extras", various settings for the export can be specified. "Delete empty lines" removes empty lines from the documents.
"No hanging indent for first line in copy text" removes indents after headings and empty lines, if indention in body text is enabled.
"Tabs at beginning of line start are x blank spaces" converts tabstops at the start of a line to x spaces.
"--- is page break" can be used to assign characters, which are converted to page breaks in the exported documents.

Notes, footnotes and images

The notes for the documents can be added at three different positions in the document: at the start, the end or after a heading. The formatting of the notes can be either left intact or be assigned to a paragraph style.
Additionally, the PDF Exporter and the Rich Text Exporter can insert images and footnotes into notes using connections between the text and the notes. These connections are established with a key, which is enclosed in a start and an stop tag. These tags are assigned in the section "Connections to notes" in the columns "Start Tag" and "Stop Tag", respectively. The connections can be enabled and disabled in the column "Status". The key for the connections can be any character string (incl. numbers). It has to be unique in one document; however, the key can be used again in other documents.
To add a footnote, the key, enclosed in start and stop tag, has to be put at the position where the footnote should appear in the exported document, e.g. {{FN1}}. During the export, a footnote marker is put at this position. The text for the footnote can then be entered in the notes in the form "start tag - key - dash - footnote text - stop tag", for example {{FN1-This is the footnote text}}. Images can be inserted the same way, it simply has to be inserted instead of the footnote text.
Additionally, footnotes can be inserted without a connection to the notes by entering the footnote text enclosed in the start and the end tag at the desired text position. The start tag has to be followed by a dash to identify it as a footnote and not as a key, e.g. {{-This is the foot note text}}.

Page Numbers (PDF export only)

The PDF exporter can number the pages in the exported documents. The page number (or the page number including the total page number) can be inserted at the top or the bottom of a page with a left-, right-, or center-alignment.
