About caption file formats

You can import and export captions in Camtasia with the following file formats:

SRT (SubRip):

This format is supported by most software video players and subtitle creation programs. The time format used is in hours:minutes:seconds, milliseconds. SRT does not contain any video data. The text file contains the sequence number, a timecode, the caption text, and a blank line. You can edit the file in any text editor, which allows for easy translation of captions into another language.

Note: Some media players require strict formatting for SRT files, such as a two line limitation, no overlapping subtitles, or a file size limit.

Example SRT file

SAMI (Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange):

This is Microsoft's format for adding captions to a variety of multimedia formats. A SMI file contains the text to be displayed within the captions and information that synchronizes individual caption displays to the multimedia presentation. This format uses CSS for formatting the source and text lines and supports language selection.

Use the same file names for the SMI file and the media file to help the player read how to link the media file to the SAMI file.
